Feature Stylist: Meet Courtney Stromquist

barber hairstylist hair cut kelowna barber shop Plan b Headquarters

“How long have you been in the industry?”

I started my apprenticeship back in September 2017. I was looking at getting into barbering and started calling different barbershops. I almost didn’t call Plan B because I thought they were so great. But they did call me for an apprenticeship and I’m so excited they did.

“Why did you choose to become a stylist/barber?”

I think it was honestly kind of out of the blue. I like being creative and working with my hands and with people. Each client is unique and I get to do something different [with their hair].

“What techniques do you specialize in?”

I’m not sure if I have a favourite yet. I love textured styles with a little length, even though I love playing with shape and texture with short styles.

“Describe your personal style.”

I don’t know if I can put it in a category. I feel like I wear pretty minimalist styles most of the time, a basic outfit with one standout piece.

“Tell us about your worst personal haircut/hair day.”

I wanted to go very Olsen bleach blonde, my mom did it (she’s a stylist and she advised against it). Of course, it went orange and brassy; it was horrible!

“If you could be any Hollywood movie character, who would it be and why?”

That’s a really hard question. There’s this really odd movie called Lars and the Real girl (it’s super obscure). The main character’s brother’s wife is the best character. She’s such a beautiful character because she’s giving and self-sacrificing. She doesn’t do anything grand, she just seems like a great person to aspire to.

“If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and could only take 3 albums with you, what would they be?”

I don’t know about albums, [but] I love the Bahamas right now. I really like Explosions in the Sky. There’s this Swedish pop artist named Leila that I also really like.

“If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and could only take 3 movies with you, what would they be?”

Is Planet Earth a movie? If you’re stuck with it watching it over and over, it would be hard to choose something that I wouldn’t get sick of. I’m not a big movie person.

“What’s your most embarrassing moment?”

Ummm, I don’t know. Nothing specific comes to mind. It’s not one moment exactly, but all through high school I had this habit of laughing at the most inappropriate moments; even though I know I shouldn’t I just couldn’t help it. So that’s embarrassing.

One time I liked this boy and I was going to his brother’s musical competition. This one girl was sooooo nervous and it was dead silent. I tried not to, but I was just laughing and I couldn’t stop. I felt so bad!

“We’re not trying to pick you up…but what’s your astrology sign?”

I think I’m an Aries? I honestly I don’t even know much about astrology or whatever but I don’t really pay attention to that stuff.

“Do you have any nicknames?”

Not really, people mostly just shorten my name “Court” or Courts, my mom has called me Courtster. Or people call me C.

“What’s one product you simply cannot live without?”

I actually really love the Kevin Murphy freehold. It smells great, has a nice light hold and a matte natural look.
