Feature Barber: Meet Madysen Salway

Plan B Kelowna Hair Salon & Barbershop | Feature Barber: Madysen Salway“How long have you been in the industry?”

It’s been about 4-5 years. I went to MC college in Kelowna but I’m originally from Princeton, BC. After hair school I moved back home and had my own shop for about 2 years. I decided to move back to Kelowna, just because it’s a bigger market with bigger opportunities. I wanted to build more clientele and have the chance for continuing training & education.

“Why did you choose to become a stylist/barber?”

I originally wanted to be a Hollywood hair & makeup artist, that was my dream in the 5th grade. My Grandma was a stylist and I always looked up to her. I’m creative and really artsy, so this is a good trade to for me to express myself and my character. When I moved back to Kelowna I made the transition to barbering. It was actually supposed to be temporary thing but I actually ended up loving it and decided to pursue it full time.

“What techniques do you specialize in?”

I love doing straight razor stuff such as shaves, it’s just as relaxing for me as it is for the client! I love doing men’s hair because a lot of guys are really open to change so we can have fun cutting long hair to short or changing up a look.

“Describe your personal style.”

Very bland and boring (*laughs) I only ever wear neutrals like black, grey, and brown. I would say I’m more like down to earth casual, not flashy at all, kind of reserved a bit.

“Tell us about your worst personal haircut/hair day.”

I was right out of hair school, I had a little too much wine one night and decided to give myself bangs right before NYE – they were so bad everyone was calling me Cleopatra, needless to say I did not get a kiss that year. I’ve had quite a few bad colours as well since I was the guinea pig in school a lot.

“If you could be any Hollywood movie character, who would it be and why?”

I have no idea! I always say I’m Beyonce because she’s flawless haha I’d be Beyonce.

“If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and could only take 3 albums with you, what would they be?”

Seriously? Ok, I would take some spa meditation stuff and then some Eminem, maybe some country hits just to really switch it up.

“If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and could only take 3 movies with you, what would they be?”

Definitely 8 Mile, The Lion King or any Disney movie.

“What’s your most embarrassing moment?”

Hmm I don’t really know there are so many… One that really sticks out is the time I shaved off my eyebrows in elementary school. My Aunt was teasing me and told me I should wax my eyebrows, so I decided to take things into my own hands and grabbed a disposable razor. Well, I ended up shaving them off. This was in like the 6th grade, my friends tried to draw them on with a Crayola marker and that definitely didn’t help. I just wore a toque for the longest time.

“We’re not trying to pick you up…but what’s your astrology sign?”

Virgo! I read horoscope stuff all the time. I’m a true Virgo, definitely a perfectionist and pay a lot of attention to detail.

“Do you have any nicknames?”

I have so many… lots of my friends call me Pookie, Nugget or Midgie – because I’m short.

“What’s one product you simply cannot live without?”

It changes a lot, depends of what style I’m trying to achieve. The Layrite cement is amazing because you can do so much with it, a little goes a long way and it smells amazing!
